Proportional representation in industry doesn’t just happen, someone has to make it happen.
Right now, we’re working with one of our clients to understand what needs to change to bring women in the door and up the ladder, and then how to make that change happen.
In a lot of industries – including the ones we work in – the number of women is rising, but it’s lopsided. They’re going into the ‘soft’ roles like admin and HR. The industries aren’t traditional ‘women’s’ industries, but the jobs are traditional women’s jobs. We’re not doing as well at getting women onto the frontlines of operational roles and there’s still plenty to be done about getting female representation at management and board level.
One of the important things we’re doing is asking a lot of questions, because it can be very tempting to think we know the answers (the right skills, the right mindset, the right opportunities…right?). We’re bringing together a group of women who have gone into this particular industry and who have found success and who are climbing that ladder. We’re asking them what helped them get there, and what held them up, and what can be done differently for the next generation.
All of this is a preparatory stage. We’re listening and learning. And then watch out, because our client is ready to shake things up! Stay tuned!
