Emi Clancy - To bring in the New Year I travelled with two of my closest friends to Melbourne with the original plan to write about my exciting and crazy adventures, but as good ol’ Murphy’s Law would have it I got the flu right before we left.
Anyway, back to the book. Things a Little Bird Told Me: Confessions of the Creative Mind, by Biz Stone, is a first-hand account of creativity, opportunity and innovation. It stimulated me to reflect on the opportunities of 2015 and the ones the future will bring.
Two quotes in particular really resonated with me: ‘Opportunity is manufactured’ and ‘If you make the opportunity you'll be in the first position to take advantage of it’.
While opportunities may arise or be manufactured, as a fresh uni grad these quotes stood out to me because of my own experiences. Starting my career I knew I couldn’t just sit at home and hope to be magically offered a job, I had to make my opportunities.
Creating opportunities is something that I really enjoy doing and try to apply to all facets of life; but it’s not for the faint-hearted. You’re never guaranteed success.
It’s important though not to use that as an excuse to just wait or expect an opportunity to come. Instead go and create it, and let yourself and your business be in ‘first position’.
You can definitely achieve a lot more by being proactive than reactive.
