Whether you’re at a formal event or striking up a conversation at a coffee shop, networking can be one of the most powerful tools for business growth. It’s more than just exchanging business cards and adding LinkedIn connections, real networking is about making genuine connections, sharing insights and opening doors to opportunities you may never have imagined.

At a recent networking training I hosted for small business owners, we focused on the true essence of building meaningful relationships. The goal? To foster an environment where everyone felt comfortable, ready to share and more importantly, to engage with one another in a way that added value. Here’s what they learnt.

Read the room

Walking into a room full of strangers can be daunting and uncomfortable for many, but it’s also full of potential. Position yourself where conversations naturally happen near the food, coffee or any event activation. These spots make it easy to strike up a casual chat.

If you already know someone in the room, that’s great, but don’t stay glued to them. Push yourself to meet new people. If you’re attending as a team, encourage everyone to split up. That way, you’ll walk away with more contacts and more chances to uncover opportunity.

Here’s a handy tip: look for groups with an odd number of people. It’s often easier to join the conversation without disrupting the flow and you’ll have a better chance of being welcomed in.

What to say (and how to keep the conversation going)

The secret to good conversation is curiosity. Ask open-ended questions, listen actively and share your own story when it makes sense. A sincere compliment or thoughtful observation can go a long way toward breaking the ice.

And don’t stress if a chat fizzles out, it happens. Smile, thank them for their time and move on. Leaving on a positive note is just as important as making a good first impression.

Body language speaks louder than words

Body language tells you a lot about how your conversation is going. If someone’s facing you, nodding and smiling, they’re engaged. If their arms are crossed, eyes glancing around or they’re body is turned away, it might be time to gracefully exit and find another conversation.

Keep your own body language open and confident. A warm smile, relaxed posture and eye contact can signal that you’re approachable and interested.

Networking with a business mindset

As much as networking is about connecting on a personal level, it’s also essential to approach it strategically from a business perspective. Here are a few tips to elevate your networking:

  • Do your research before the event. Know who’s attending and what industries will be present. This helps you make the most of your time and approach the right people.
  • Have business cards ready or be prepared to connect on LinkedIn. Having a follow-up strategy is key.
  • Follow up post-event. Share insights, connect with new contacts and keep the conversation going.

The follow-up is where the magic happens

Want to make a lasting impression? Share something of genuine value. Whether it’s an insightful recommendation, industry tip or simply a thoughtful comment, making a positive impact will ensure people remember you long after the event is over.

And remember, networking isn’t a one-time thing, it’s about nurturing relationships over time. Keep the relationship warm by engaging with their LinkedIn posts, checking in over coffee, or sending a relevant article their way. Staying top of mind keeps the relationship alive and the door open for future opportunities.
