The Horticulture Code of Conduct is the most important piece of regulation for much of the fresh produce sector, and it’s up for review right now for the first time in a decade. The code shapes trading relationships, sets expectations across the supply chain and underpins confidence between growers and traders in the central markets system.

We’ve been working with the NSW industry body Freshmark to present a submission that is not just a list of complaints about the code, but one which offers workable solutions. There is strong interest in making sure the Code is workable on the ground and supports long term stability.

A big part of that has been the work to bring together industry input in a structured way. This requires judgement about what to prioritise, where there is alignment and how to express it in a way that is both credible and constructive.

We’ve been enjoying this opportunity to bring member perspectives together, test positions and translate ideas into recommendations that reflect the experience of the sector.

Submissions to this review are the strongest way for the sector to influence where the review lands, and they need to be sharp, consistent and backed by real experience. The key thing in Freshmark’s favour has been a highly engaged, dedicated and insightful working group.

Next week most of them will be off at Hort Connections, networking, continuing to promote the full breadth of the fresh produce sector and hopefully snacking on a lot of fantastic, fresh Australian produce!

Outcomes of the review are likely to be released in the next few months. If you want to know more about it, go here.

If you have a submission to prepare or want to engage with regulators or government, talk to us about how we can help.
