As part of our year of creativity, April was the month to go “inspiration hunting” and to get out of our bubble. Kendi and Sue did this by going overseas and Alex and Karen found it in other places.
Sue – Two weeks across New Zealand’s South and North Islands got me properly out of my bubble, but Christchurch really stayed with me. After losing much of the city to a devastating earthquake, what stands now is thoughtful, intentional and quietly resilient. It’s a reminder that disruption can create space to rebuild better.
Kendi – I got myself out of my regular bubble and into a Borneo bubble – and the most valuable part from a work perspective was that I had no access to a thing while I was gone. It meant that when I got back I got a real look at what things had moved and what had not while I was away. Everything can feel urgent and important when you’re in the thick of it – taking time out is a useful way to gauge where real priorities sit, what really matters and where to focus.
Alex – I may have been the only one who didn’t take a proper holiday this month, but I still managed to sneak away for a few days and lean into hybrid working. Two nights down south with my parents, sister and my new nephew at my grandparents meant quality family time, with meetings and client work tucked into the arvo while everyone else napped!
Karen – Seems odd to get away in the city in which you grew up, and in a space that you used to inhabit, but that was how I got away in Sydney in April. I spent four days in Sydney, three of them at the Royal Easter Show thoroughly lapping up everything from the horse show, in which I was a competitor as a child, to the art and dairy cattle exhibitors and dog and cat shows. We stayed in a part of Sydney I had never been before. Seeing it all as a visitor was absorbing and an escape from the drought now encompassing my now regional home once again.
